The Pumpkin and the Puppy

A Corgi, a pumpkin, and mass confusion. The puppy barks at it. Pounces on it. Challenges it. And the pumpkin remains still.

This little Corgi is named Bilbo. A stubby-legged puppy, named after a fantastical character in “The Hobbit” — a character half the size of a human. How perfect!

And ah, “The Hobbit.” I remember reading that J.R. R.Tolkien children’s book when I was young. I felt transported to a magical land somewhere beneath the earth. “The Hobbit” was set in a mystical place full of elves, dwarves, trolls. The fantasy novel exploded with a rich landscape of lakes, lairs, black forests, misty mountains.

After discovering “The Hobbit,” all I wanted to do was read, read, read. And of course, learn to write. “The Hobbit” amazed and delighted me…just like this little pumpkin does to an 8-week-old puppy named Bilbo.
