Oh yes, they do!
And now the U.S. team — champions of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup — are on a victory tour.
It started in Vancouver, after the U.S. rolled over Japan 5-2 to win the championship. Carli Lloyd, who had a hat trick in the final, hoisted the trophy high. Surrounded by her thrilled teammates. Buoyed by a sea of fans in red, white and blue face paint and crazy outfits, all celebrating the team’s four goals in the first 16 minutes of play.
Then it was on to L.A. Thousands of fans waiting for them at L.A. Live. Smiles and cheers and screams and shouts. Then on to New York City. Floats and a ticker tape parade. A Taylor Swift concert, where they took the stage with the pop singer.
Sports Illustrated, where they secured an unprecedented 25 different magazine covers. One for each player, plus a group shot. And the ESPYS last night, where they walked the red carpet and won the “Best Team” award.
I haven’t been this excited for a women’s sports team, since the U.S. won the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Remember? It was when Brandi Chastain whipped off her white jersey and dropped to her knees in her black sports bra, giving us a truly iconic image.
This Saturday July 18, the Chicago Red Stars — our own professional women’s soccer team — welcome home Julie Johnston, Christen Press, Lori Chalupny and Shannon Boxx. These four incredible athletes played on the 2015 Women’s World Cup team. And now they are superstars. Deservedly so!
I’m still trying to get a couple of tickets for the Chicago event. Never give up, right? That’s definitely what these fantastic female athletes would say.
